“The giant Gorgon looks as like a huge statue,” wrote Corriere della Sera after Poland’s opening 3-2 win over Argentina. “He looks like he could break the leather ball with one kick.” The hulking centre-back almost did in their second. Robert Gadocha laid a free-kick to his right and Gorgon thwacked the adidas Telstar Durlast into the top corner. It helped Poland score seven times without reply for what remains their biggest victory in World Cup history.
